Year 8

Welcome to Year 8Mrs Finch – Assistant Head

Hello, my name is Mrs Perkin and I am the Year 8 Progress Leader, as well as a Key Stage 3 English teacher. Year 8 is an important and exciting year, as it is the final year you will spend at James Bateman before moving on to high school. My aim is to make this year as enjoyable, rewarding and successful as possible, while ensuring that you are well prepared for the next stage of your education.

By Year 8, you are well established in the values that make our school such a positive and respectful community. You demonstrate maturity, leadership and responsibility in your daily school life and these qualities are recognised when selecting students to take on the important role of prefect. Our prefects act as excellent role models for others and represent the school with pride. Community events and fundraisers also give the opportunity to celebrate the commitment and positive attitude of our prefect team.

Throughout the year, you will take part in a wide range of performances, workshops and trips. We believe that learning goes beyond the classroom, so we organise experiences that help you build confidence, develop new skills and enjoy your final year at James Bateman. In the autumn term, you will take part in a number of workshops designed to help you begin thinking about your future, including careers sessions and visits from external organisations. At the end of the term, we will celebrate your achievements and hard work with a reward trip to CineBowl.

As the year progresses, even more exciting opportunities follow. During the spring term, you will take part in activities that focus on important topics such as decision-making, personal safety and future aspirations. Programmes run by Higher Horizons will encourage you to think about education and career opportunities beyond school, while also giving you the chance to visit university campuses and experience what further education might be like.Photo of the Year 6 students who went to Blue peris in 2023

Events & Activities

The summer term is always a particularly exciting time for Year 8 students. There will be further events focusing on enterprise and life skills, along with experiences designed to help you develop confidence and independence. One of the highlights of the year is the Year 8 residential trip, where students travel by ferry to explore the culture, history and landmarks of the visited region. This five-day trip provides a fantastic opportunity to learn outside the classroom while creating lasting memories.

Alongside this, there will also be opportunities to celebrate the end of your time at James Bateman. Events such as the Year 8 Prom and our end-of-year reward trip to Alton Towers give you the chance to reflect on everything you have achieved and enjoy memorable experiences with your classmates.

Transition

We also understand that moving on to high school can feel a little daunting. Throughout the year, we work closely with Biddulph High School to ensure that the transition to Year 9 is as smooth as possible. You will have opportunities to attend assemblies, meetings and transition events that help you become familiar with the environment and expectations of high school. These activities are designed to help you feel confident, prepared and excited about the next stage of your journey.

Year 8 is a special year filled with opportunities to challenge yourself, develop independence and create lasting memories. We are incredibly proud of our students and look forward to supporting you throughout the year as you make the most of every opportunity and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
