Curriculum Intent

The curriculum at James Bateman is rich in knowledge.

James Bateman Middle School provides opportunities for all our pupils through our curriculum and wider educational opportunities. Our intent is to ensure that all pupils make outstanding progress and that our curriculum will remove any barriers that may affect their learning.

Subject-specifically, the curriculum is built around a progression model that ensures pupils incrementally gain deep knowledge and skills that are fundamental to each subject. Purposeful assessment is integral to the curriculum to ensure knowledge is fully embedded and highlights areas for development.

Throughout the curriculum there is a strong emphasis on developing;

  • a ‘love of learning’.
  • readiness, resilience and respectfulness: the skills required to be a productive member a diverse 21st century society
  • an understanding of ‘British Values’ and the implications for life in modern day Britain.
  • pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural learning.
  • independence and enabling pupils to become creative, critical thinkers.
  • an understanding of the importance, through the careers programme, of the opportunities available to pupils once they leave school.

At the heart of the school is the focus on broadening pupils’ cultural horizons to ensure they are able to continue to the next stage of their educational journey.


The design and technology curriculum at James Bateman allows pupils to develop progressive knowledge and skills in a range of technology areas including; product design, textiles, graphics and Food Technology, preparing them for the next phase of their education and lives. The curriculum areas draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

  • The recently purchased laser cutter is used to enhance knowledge of computer aided manufacturing techniques.
  • Product design and food technology have fully equipped dedicated specialist rooms and alongside specialist teachers, an experienced technician supports both areas.
  • Pupils are offered opportunities to take part in various competitions for example; the Bateman Bake Off.


Ready, resilient, respectful

Pupils learn how to use specialised tools and apparatus safely. They learn to make nutritious food, using skills there are able to take away from the classroom.

Evidence of knowledge/skills

Assessment is conducted throughout the projects, with regular questioning and recall for every pupil to participate in. End of topic knowledge quizzes, practical skills and evidence checklists are provided to engage pupils in reviewing their learning and areas to focus on.

Student voice

Students have a passion for design and technology, particularly the independence of using the tools and equipment in the specialist rooms during practical lessons. The subject develops confidence and a sense of achievement for all pupils, focusing on their individual strengths and talents. They will demonstrate their understanding during review and retrieval opportunities in lessons. Pupils engage in independent practice, guided with relevant scaffolding and challenges for various abilities.
